Alright ladies...
I need a bit of help! I have been browsing through the galleries and have seen tons of great glass ornaments that are stamped in and on (if that makes sense). I would love some instructions/dimensions for these projects...I think I have found what I want to do for Christmas gifts for my co-workers now I just have to figure out how you do it :o) So here are my questions...
For stamping on the glass...
does this work?
which works better the bulb or "flat" ornaments?
do you use Staz On?
do you have to heat set? or emboss?
can you color in with sharpies?
For the Acetate/window sheets in the ornaments...
same as above...
what dimensions do you cut the acetate to?
does anyone have a template?
You guys are so talented and I'm hoping that someone out there has a few anwers/tips for me before I embark on my ornament escapade. Thanks in advance!

I have only tried the acetate/window sheet ornaments. I used the Coluzzle and just layed the ornament on the template and eyeballed the size. My ornament is the 2 5/8" size from Michael's. I left a little tab like was suggested in a previous post and that helps to keep it upright if you have a stamped image that requires it. The stazon is a little tricky as it smears so easy but you can clean it off and try again. Lightly heat-setting helps.
I have been making these like crazy. They're so easy! I had to go back to Michael's and buy more ornaments. Everyone I know is getting these this year.
So you stamp on the acetate with Staz-On and then you what? roll it up, slip it through the opening of the ornament and what? Just let go? and it unfurls and stays upright? I guess I just don't quite understand how you get the finished product.
I made these a few years ago....but painted on the acetate. It was easy. I should make some stamped ones this year!
As I remember it was easy. I think the toughest thing was getting the diameter of the acetate the correct size. But once I had it I just made tons of circles. THe tab on the top is a great idea.
Once the image was on the acetate, I just rolled it up and slipper it in the top of the ornament. It simply uncurled once inside!
Where did you go in the gallery to see 'tons' of glass ornaments? Every time I do a search I only end up with a few. Any suggestions for refining my search?
Thanks for any help.

I am a gallery junkie...I could spend days...and often do...looking through everything. I just looked in the "anything but cards section". I may have exaggerated with the amount, but there were enough that inspired me to try this. The problem with searching by the project name is that sometimes people name thier files based on the sets that they used. So I'm not sure how to refine it any better.
As for me...I experimented and had a blast. Here are some basic directions for what i did...
1. Measure the diameter of your ornament. I found the "flat" round ones I got at Michaels worked best...the cubes were a little tricky, but I will keep trying. I am also going to try the larger "bulb" ones today. I was using my CM cirlce cutter system to cut the acetate and I found that the middile sized circle with the red blade worked best for the ornaments that I was using.
2. Cut your acetate, but not a complete circle...leave a gap for you tab... between a 1/4 and 1/2 and inch...some of the "mouths" of the ornaments were are a little irregular and i had to make some adjustments, but no big deal.
3. Stamp you image in Staz On...This can be tricky b/c the acetate is so slippery that it slides and blurs your image, usually distorting the details. I found a very light touch worked the best.
4. Here you have two oprtions. You can let it sit for a bit...not very long a two or three minutes to let the ink dry. OR For those of you without the patience (like me) you can grab your heat tool and holding it fairly far away heat set the Staz On. Be sure not to get it too close or you will warp/melt the acetate....I did it for about 30-45 sec. **when I was stamping several of the same design I did not heat set....I did them assembly line style...all the stamping first, then by the time I was ready to color the first ones I stamped they were plenty dry**
5. Color in you image...I colored on the back side from where I stamped so that the Staz On wouldn't smear. I suggest having the fine tip sharpies, b/c the detail work can be difficult with the regular sharpies. Give these a little time to set/dry. Like I said the assembly line thign worked perfect for me.
6. Roll up you acetate. The smaller the better b/c some of the edges of the "mouth" can be rough and scratch the acetate when you slide it in, which shows up as a white line through the acetate...not very pretty. Sometimes they pop right open other times they need to be opened with the help of tweezers or the end of a watercolor brush...be careful with the tweezers b/c they are sharp (I have the tweezer bees ones) and can also scratch the acetate.
7. *OPTIONAL* I filled most of mine with a little extra fine, glittery, plastic snow. Not all the way, but just a light layer on the bottom. I've seen beads, and confetti used as well.
I had so much fun with these...they are sooooooo cute and really fun and easy. I would have to agree that they toughes part is cutting the acetate to fit. But once I figured which size worked best, I just cute 2 sheets worth of "inserts" and stamped to my hearts content. I had a few mess ups b/c of the smeared Staz On, but no big deal...toss it and grab another insert. I will take some pictures and post them if I can. I hope this helps any of you who are confused....maybe I will even do a step by step instruction sheet....with pictures...I love when I can find those for a technique...they help me a ton. Anywho...Have fun and post what you come up with....I want to see what other sets people are using to do this

Alright ladies...I was very motivated this morning...I guess we can thank that extra hour of sleep
Here is the tutorial that I came up with for making the glass ornaments with the acetate inserts...complete with pictures. please let me know what you think of it...does it make sense? are the pictures clear? did I miss type anything? hee hee
I have an idea for a stamp camp...a "Stamping: the gift that keeps on giving" party. We will make 4 or 5 different gifts (including this one..hee hee). Each guest will leave with a completed project as well as the instructions on how to do it, so they can do it on thier own...what do you think? So as I come up with more of these I will share them too...are there any that you can think of that would be good? I was thinking...Jr. Legal Pad Portfolio with matching pen, candles, gift bag, 2,4,6,8 bag, maybe some sort of gift card holder, etc... any other ideas?
Anywho...I hope this helps and that if you make any please post them...I am curious to see what stamp sets y'all would use. thanks for this inspiration.

You can buy the window sheets from SU! or you can buy "overhead transparancies" from office supply stores. Have fun!

How do you keep the acetate from clinging to the inside of the ornament? I want mine to "float", but it keeps wanting to attach itself to a side. Is this where the tab you are talking about comes in handy? Or do you rinse out the ornament first? I'm using the "flat" ones, not the balls.
Thanks for any pointers.

Breanne - The info and instructions you shared are great! I can't wait to try this. My husband is going hunting next weekend and I plan to try them then. I'll let you know how they turn out.

srogers5....
yeah the tab helps keep it in the middle...adding snow or confetti or something also helps too.
I'm so glad that everyone has found this helpful...I actually feel like I am giving back to a site that has given so much to me :o)
PLEASE post your ornaments...I am curious to see what everyone comes up with.

It's someone who buys stamps they didn't normally like at first, only to see it in Split Coast Stampers gallery in a different perspective.
I have some transparencies but it is kind of thick. Not sure how it will work.It is glossy also. What is acetate.I know it's a paper but where do I get it to make these ornaments. Can I get it at MICHEALS OR A STAPLES OR SU.
1 more question. To make these ornaments am I just basically stamping an image on the acetate.then cutting it out and rolling it up and putting it inside the ornament. Is this going to be glued anyway to the inside or does it just get pushed up against the inside of the ball and stay there.
I really need some more directions but can't download the tutorial.don't know how to do that since it asking me for a disk.I don't know what or how to do that I don't have the disk it's asking me for.So can someone please just post the directions here.
Not very good with downloading and software.sorry.

hmmm never saw the flat ones, just LOTS of round ones. Will have to look around, but did get good deals on the round ones last year after Christmas, so should use them up first!!
I was trying to make one of these ornaments a few nights ago and was not happy with my stamped image(it just didn't pop out at me!), so I wondered what would happen if I tried to heat emboss instead?! I versamarked the tree from Curly Christmas onto a transparency, used a mixture of pearl ex and clear EP powder, sprinkled it on, heat embossed and the result was a very pretty, shimmery tree! I didn't have trouble with the plastic warping, but I was very careful with the heat tool and moved it around a lot. Nor did I have trouble rolling it up to insert it into the ornament.
I love, love, love to heat emboss -- I've tried it on to many things to count!!!
I made s bunch fo these this weekend - I love these suckers and went back to Micheals a few times to get more ornaments....
I prefer the smaller flatter ones (look sort of like an M&M - not fully round).
Here is a HUGE trick for transparencies...buy transparency sheets that are designed for inkjet printers - one side is a little "rough" and that is the side I use my Staz-on on - virtually no slipping at all with my stamp.
Then I used my sharpies on the opposite side to color in so as not to disturb the Staz-on.
I used my CM circle cutter to cut out the circles (and yes leave a tab on the top that will fit up in the mouth of the ornament to keep the window still) and i got about 7 out of one sheet so a pack will go a long way...
My ornaments turned out beautiful (at least I think so) I need to scan some in....

I love the ornaments with the acetate in the gallery. How do they get the snowman colored in white???? Do they make white sharpies?? Do they use something else????
I'm so overwhelmed by all the emails and messages thanking me and asking for the directions b/c they couldn't get it off the website. I will be working on a few more of these tutorials for a "Girlfriends, Gifts, Goodies...and stamping" night :o) (what do you think of the name? I am working on a flyer for it) Anwho...I am having issues sending the attatchment from this web site, so if you still can't get it, email me off site at [email protected] and I will get it to you. I was just browsing the gallery and there are tons of new ornaments downloaded and they are soooooo great! I was also curious about the "white Snowmen" so when I was at JoAnns today i bought an Opaque white paintpen and I plan on trying that. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for all the kind words and thanks....YOUR'E WELCOME! it's the least I can do for a site and wonderful stampers that inspire me daily!
I got the beard of my Santa white with the ink from the craft pad. I just rubbed it on with a tissue. It won't dry right away, but if you use the "tab" idea, it won't matter. The stamped image will stay in the middle of the ornament so smudging won't be a problem.
OK after going home last night I got out some of my supplies that have gotten tucked into the corner and came upon a Galaxy Marker - the color is Milky Way White - so I decided to try it on Acetate and it STUCK...and colored in white beautifully - plus it dried quite quick
So if you don't have a white craft pad and want to try and color in something white pick up one of these markers - I bought it probably a year or so ago and it had to have come from Micheals...probably around the area where they keep the Gel Pens...

Can anyone give me tips on the technique where you drop reinker and glitter into the ball? I've been looking and looking and can't seem to find good directions!
also, someone mentioned that if their stamp got smeared, they threw away the insert. use a baby wipe and wipe it off right after you do it, before it dries, and you have a clean insert to try again!

these are so cute - thanks for the directions. i don't know what to make for teachers gifts now - legal pads, beaded pens, glass ornaments - around here the list goes on and on - oh heck maybe they'll get them all since they are so fun to make!

Just a suggestion to help in stamping on acetate/window sheets, use a
Stamp-a-ma-jig. I stamped my daughter's bedroom walls using acrylic paint and couldn't believe how slippery it was. Once I started using the Stamp-a-ma-jig, I had no problem. I would think that it would work the same for the ornaments. Hope this helps!
