Default Technique Lovers Challenge 10 -- everyone welcome

This week's Technique Lover's Challenge is the Joseph's Coat Technique. Please remember to put TLC10 in the Keywords section when you upload your card. Then come back here and post a link to it so that we can all enjoy it!
If you have never tried a TLC before, jump right in! We'd love to have you play along.

Here are my inspiration pieces for you:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Here's how to do it!

This technique works best with bold stamps...line images won't work as well. You will also need to use glossy cardstock.

First, get some color on glossy cardstock. You can do this in several ways: use a sponge and smear on different colors, use a Spectrum pad and a brayer or do what I did: heavily spritz the glossy paper with water, and smear on slightly diluted reinkers with q-tips or an Aquapainter. Get the color on and let it dry if necessary.
Next, rub the Embossing Buddy over the colored glossy paper. Ink up your stamp with Versamark, and randomly stamp the image all over the colored glossy paper. Emboss with Clear Embossing Powder. Let the card cool.
Last, ink up the foam attachment of the brayer with Basic Black or another dark color. Brayer the Basic Black over the entire stamped and embossed sheet. (Rubber gloves are helpful here to keep your hands clean!) If you don't have a brayer, you can use a sponge and rub the color on...it will just take a bit longer. Once the sheet is completely covered with black, take a paper towel and buff the whole sheet. The embossed images will POP right out you, revealing the colors behind the embossed images.

This is a really fun technique that produces some really neat effects. I hope you enjoy trying it out! I had never tried it myself until yesterday. I can't wait to see what you creative gals come up with!

I have been having entirely too much fun with this, this morning. I definitely need to get some housework done and my camera batteries are dying, so I doubt I'll be posting much more for a while! Can't wait to see what everyone else is coming up with....

The short answer is to copy and paste the URL of your card in the gallery to here. The long answer and everything you need to know and more is in this thread....

Oh great challenge! I've always wanted to try this out, but I'm intimidated by it! If I get a chance to stamp tonight I will try this! Oh wait, I don't have an embossing tool! Guess I'll have to wait until my next order comes in. :(

Ok. I should have read the instructions before I tried this technique! I didn't use glossy paper, I used ultrasmooth, but they both came out okay, I think. Tell me what you think :

I don't think it matter how you get the color on. You could try direct to paper as well. Last night I tried the baby wipe technique with reinkers and wiped the color on. My camera batteries have died so I will post it later.

Have fun,
Julia

Alisa, I think you can use a toaster, just be SUPER careful! I think I heard a story about Shelli doing just that once upon a time.

Andi, sure you can use markers. You might also try using a sponge dabbed on the ink pad and rubbed on the cardstock. And you don't need a brayer to do the top layer...just use a sponge and rub the black on...a brayer just makes it faster!

I can't wait to check out the creations posted overnight!

One time when my heat gun was MIA (missing in action) I used a neighbor's stove. I used the burners and she had the newer smooth glass type stove. It worked fine but it gets hot!!

Here is the Mother's Day card I made last night. I went out and got some batteries and some more clear embossing powder so I am now back in business. My 2YO managed to dump the contents of three embossing powder containers into a lovely mixture on the floor yesterday. Black, white and clear EP everywhere!

I don't have Kaleidoscope ink pads, so I used my Shapes stamp set and inked the US white cardstock with four different colors, then I embossed. Do you think the Kaleidoscope pads are a good buy? If so, which color group should I order?

Julia, did you save the mixed EP's? I'll bet you could get some funky, unusual and fun results!

I didn't know you could do it without a brayer. Thanks for the tip. I've been wanting to try this technique but couldn't. Now I just have to find some time to play!

No, I never thought of it. I was a little annoyed at the time! Couldn't wait to get the vacuum out and clean it up so I could stamp again. There was EP stuck to some stamps, my stampin' scrub, my chair, the floor. I should have taken a picture! This morning I went to Michael's (couldn't wait for a SU order to arrive... gotta work on this technique you know) and spent $18 Cdn to replace it.

Ooh! I'd really like to try this, but don't have any glossy cardstock, a brayer, or reinkers, and only a few marker colors. I guess I'll have to wait until next week. But thank goodness these challenges stay on the boards so we can go back and try the techniques! I'm new to stamping so I like to learn them! thanks for the new ideas!

Dear Linn,

Can't wait to see your cards when you are able to make them. It's hard to get everything at once but slowly you will get your supplies up there.

BillieBee, I have a few of the Spectrum pads...fiesta, blue frost, and pumpkin patch....I like them for a few things, but if it was choice between a spectrum pad and 2-3 regular ink pads, I would go for the regular ink pads. Something about the stripes of colors when I use them bugs me. This is just my opinion, of course...I'm sure there are others that *love* the spectrum pads.

What do you other gals think?

I like the Spectrum pads but I definitely would collect most of the full-size pads first. Pick a Spectrum pad that matches colors that you would usually use to get the most use out of it. Also look through the gallery and keep a track of what you really like.

I like the multi color pads but they can be a bit tricky to work with and take some practice. Unlike the regular pads where you can brayer, sponge, stamp exactly how you want it. Don't get me wrong, I like the multi color pads but sometimes I feel they are a great big bother!

Haven't had time to play the technique challenges lately. I signed up for too many swaps all in the same week, and they are coming due! AAAAaaaahhhhhh.

Here is a Joseph's Coat from my gallery. I updated it to add SC10 in front of the title.

The samples posted are great! Just wondering if anyone has tried this technique using Versamark as a resist instead of embossing? Just curious.

Thanks,

i haven't tried the versamark idea but think it would probably smudge and not look as shiny as you really need to buff off the black to get it to look great. If you do try it, be sure to post your attempt so we can all see.

Same here, I've been working on swaps everynight and haven't been able to play with the TLC and sketch challenges :( Can't wait to get them done and be able to stamp for me!

I've been checking out everyone's samples though and they are all great!

I'll give it a try tonight. When I do the 'regular' versamark resist I usually let it the dry well before I put the ink over it and then I can buff to my hearts content without any smearing. I thought it might lift the ink off from under with this method though. Only one way to find out! If it works I may take the plunge and upload a pic.

I haven't posted any cards here before. I mostly lurk but absolutely love this site. There are soo many talented people with great ideas! I'm a big time CASE'r. :o)

Here is a link to page two of my gallery. The last two images on the first row are a tutorial and then the example page for some resist techniques. The largest sample is VersaMark resist and I have made a lot of cards using this technique.

I've never done a versamark resist in which I've brayered dark ink over it. I usually use detailed stamps for this, and bolder stamps for Joseph's coat.

Here is my card. What do you think?
I can copy it but it won't let me paste it in this box.
I can paste it in the title but no where else.
