For those of you putting your e-mail addresses in your posts...
Lately I've noticed a large number of posts where people have been requesting templates, instructions, etc., and have been including their full e-mail addresses. Did you all know that when you do that you're opening yourself up to spam attacks? Spammers often use computer programs that search web pages and internet message boards for e-mail addresses to add to their mailing lists, and the usual dead giveaway is that little '@' symbol combined with the '.com' or '.net' ending. You can fool these programs by writing your address in such a way that only a human being can read it -- for example, type "username AT serviceprovider DOT com". Another solution would be to simply PM your address to the other person.

Bumping this one back to the top because I'm still seeing e-mail addresses in posts and I don't want my dear SCS sisters to be unknowingly contributing to their own spam problems!

Oh thank you I do that and never thought twice about it. I am sorry but how do I PM someone. I am pretty computer illiterate.
Thanks
(Hi from the prairies! )
If you click on the person's name, a lil' pop-up box should appear and one of the options is "Send a private message" (somethin' like that).
Go ahead; click on someone's name in this thread to see the box.
If you click on "Send..." it'll take you to a different window where you can compose your PM!
And thanks, row4d, for posting all that info and bumping the thread.
Okay...so it moves it "up"...but up where?!? On the old server you could find current messages on the home page...but I have yet to find out what threads are in use at the time I'm on, except to just search through the forums...am I missing something?

Stampin' 'til 3 in the morning!
I have posted and/or bumped on this thread at least 5 times. It's important that you not put your e-mail address in a forum, just with PM's. I saw a bunch more e-mail addresses in posts today and just spent 45 minutes trying to find this thread and bump it to the top! It disappeared off my subscription list and now I see that I'm not showing anywhere above. I went looking for all my posts and there were none for this thread! Then I tried to remember which forum this was in and finally lucked into it. Cue the Twilight Zone music!
Here it is again. Saw another bunch of e-mails posted in a thread asking for directions for some technique. I don't have time to pm each one to tell them how they are leaving themselves open for spammers, etc. :(
Thanks again for taking a moment to tell me about what I was doing. I read so much on this site..but missed this one. I went back and removed all I could...and won't do that again. Thanks for trying to protect all of us Splitcoaststampers girls...your a friend indeed..Patsy
Read and heed, ladies! Bumpity, bump, bump! ("Bumping" is the act of moving something back to the head of the new posts so as to attract more/new readers!)
Between Rachel and me, we'll keep this alive. I just saw a thread that not only was full of e-mail addresses, but some of them even had their e-mail address in their signature block.

I didn't know how to disguise it and hadn't thought about it. Thank you so much.
I saw a great tip when signing into my Hotmail account last week:
"Treat your e-mail address like your telephone number -- Do not post it in public places."
An internet message board is about as public as it gets! ;)

I have given myself 2 different email addresses. The one I use for groups, web sites etc.. and one I use for personal use only. I have not had one spam mail on my personal address in almost a year!
Just thought I would throw that out there for anyone looking for a spam helper (not a solution because there is always a risk..)
The other problem with posting your email addresses directly in the post is that it becomes tedious for both read ad original poster.
For the readers, because they have to wade through tons of posts saying nothing but "me too", "send it to me", "I want to know", etc. Creates too much wasted time.
Tedious for the person being asked for the info because it's too much work for that kind sharing sould to have to wade back through all the posts to copy ech individual email address, then go over to her email and paste each one, then back here to copy again, back to email, and on & on, you get the idea. It is easier for that person if you send a personal message (PM), then she can just click reply.

I created a special e-mail address, hadn't registered with it at any websites or sent anyone a message using it, yet my inbox was spammed within 24 hours!
