I'm a new demo and I'm having an Open House Friday night. I want to display the vellum lampshade on the wine glass project. It's SO cool! But my lampshade doesn't stay together. We used a solid strip of Mono adhesive, but it didn't hold. I put another strip on.
Is there a way to get it to stay? Is there a special kind of tape?? This morning I'll be stopping at M's or J's with my coupon.
Susan - I bought a spray called "Scrappers' Spray" by Creative Imaginations for vellum. I only use it for myself, not to demo because we don't sell it, but I wanted something made specifically for Vellum (which this is) that didn't show the mono line through a nice design. Yuck! I hope you can find something like this. I got mine in a scrapbook store in Virginia Beach.

Try Scotch Brand vellum tape. I wonder if our sticky strips would work? Hmmm.
And I always put three brads along the seam for extra strength, but that's because I don't usually do vellum, I just use USW or Vanilla. I have one pictured in my gallery.

I made a design change in the lamp shade pattern to help with this problem. Here's what I did...
First make your pattern approx 1/4" longer (I had 1/4" for overlap to start with so that was what I needed to increase with). Use card stock vellum not the paper vellum.
At one end, measure in 1/4" and starting from the top cut a slit 1/2 way down the lampshade. Very important - measure don't guestimate! At the other end, measure in 1/4" and starting at the bottom cut a slit 1/2 way up the lampshade. Again, no guestimating.
Roll up your lampshade so that the slits line up and slide one end into the other so that the "flaps" are both inside the shade. Use a little mono (or whatever adhesive you prefer) to tac down edges - both inside and out.
That last part will (hopefully) make sense when you put yours together.
It does leave a rather large "seam" (1/2") from the overlap but I decided I'd rather have that then have them open back up! I haven't tried making the flaps smaller - I was just so excited that they stayed together that I left it at that!
Oh, almost forgot - do not stamp on the flaps!
If needed, I could probably take a picture of one in the sliding together part. Just let me know.
Another idea with a different look...maybe try eyelets parallel to the seam on either side and run a cute ribbon through them cris-crossing them with and ending with a bow either on top or bottom. Might look cute, but might look funky. I, too, have been playing with these. I haven't tried them with the vellum, but I think they would be cute. I've been using hot glue on mine and so far, they have stayed together.
However, I have another problem...Sometimes I use hot glue on accessories (jewels, beads, vellum, etc.) and it doesn't hold very well. The tape doesn't seem to do the trick; superglue doesn't work...and I'm out of ideas. Any other suggestions?
Also, do you use SU! tape to tack ribbon down? Please help!
I forgot about that Sticky Strip, I bought it but haven't used it except for the gable boxes! It would work GREAT, but you'd see the line on where the ends meet. If that's okay, it will be just what you need!

I like the idea of a tab or brads to hold them together. I made over 150 of them for my friends wedding in June. We just used back to back tape to hold them together. Is that the same as the Sticky Strip?

well, they're on in reverse order but at least I got them there! While I was doing this for the pictures, I realized that the flaps could be narrower if your adhesive is narrower as well.
I use deco fasteners on my smaller shades - one near the top and one near the bottom seems to hold them just fine. I make four shades - one each for four seasons - and present them flat for storage along with the stemmed votive holder. All the person has to do is insert the brads in the pre-punched holes and it's together. They can be taken apart again for storage as each season changes. They don't add too much weight. I try to position the top one so it rides on the lip of the votive holder to give the shade more balance.

The one Keri gave us the link for is the wine glass one. My pattern is for a lampshade on baby food jars. Keri - should I send it to you?
Pam you know I have a ton of those baby foods jars and I am sure I will have a ton more in just a few more months!! LOL Please do send the pattern!! I would love to have something like that! [email protected]
And Jan, I love the idea of one for each season!!!
Keri & nightowl - I haven't forgotten about you! I've bee trying to scan my pattern to I can just PM it to you but the scanner and I are currently having a disagreement as to who is the boss on this project. If I can't get it to work in the next couple of attempts, I'll see about snail mailing it to you.
I tried to PM the file but apparently it's to big. I'll see if it will post here.
I hope you have MSWord cause I made it a document. To print it at the correct size, set you margins all at zero. The computer will say it doesn't like that and you choose ignore.
If you're making the lamp shade for a Gerber size 2 jar, then use the mark for stage 3 as the end of the lamp shade. I usually cut the shade with deckle scissors. You will have to do some trimming where the end over lap. I tried to adjust the pattern so that would be necessary but I couldn't get it lined up just right and I figured better too much than to little.
