If there is enough interest, I would like to begin an Artist Trading Card Challenge. Artist Trading Cards are typically created as one of kind , part of an edition with a limited number being made (for example, an artist may make 50 of a certain design which would then be numbered 1/50, 2/50, 3/50, . . . ), or part of a series (for example, an artist may make a series of fall wildflower cards.)
I found these sites when I did a google search. I found the following information on these sites. I'm sure you can find many more.
There are only two rules for Artist Trading Cards:
1. The cards should be 2.5 x 3.5
2. The cards must not be sold; they must be traded with other artists.
It is recommended that the back be signed and dated and if the card is part of an edition that they be numbered.
This challenge, which I hope will be the first of many weekly challenges, is to create a monochromatic card using variations of one color and a neutral.
My first card uses Bashful Blue, Night of Navy, and Whisper White.
Please post here when you have completed your card, even if you're not able to post a photo of you ATC (Artist Trading Card.) Links to your posted cards would be greatly appreciated. Please put ATC1 in the keywords. Also, please check back here often to see what new has been posted. I encourage you, too, to comment on as many ATCs as possible. Looking forward to seeing what you create.
I would like to do this by theme, and anyone would be welcome to pass along ideas. Tonight is Thursday, and right now going from Thursday to Wednesday works for me. I know there is another challenge that begins on Thursdays. If anyone wants to change the day, it's ok with me. It just happened that I make my ATC today.
I participate in challenges for personal growth. When I participate in challenges, it stretches me and requires me to try something new. I don't want to put too many restrictions in the challenge. I want to keep it simple. But for me, a challenge to do monochromatic brown (not my favorite color) would have been a true challenge! But these are just for fun and for learning - no cash prizes.
And for your third question - anything goes. If you choose to trade your Artist Trade Cards, that's up to you, and who you are trading with may have preferences. I just need a little kick in the pants to get me to try something new. These are small, don't take up much room and I can use them for a quick reference for a technique or color combination that worked - or didn't work.
Anyway. I hope some of this makes since. I've already been to bed once. The phone rang about 10 minutes after I drifted off and now I'm afraid I may be up for the night. Oh, well. I'll get to spend a little more time with my friends on SCS.
How many cards are we supposed to do for each challenge?
I liked what I saw on one of the web sites you linked to. I could use these as little business cards that actually SHOW what I do rather than just give my name and other information!!
I understand about the up all night thing! That's me on all too many occassions. Sometimes I just can't make my brain turn off.
I already have an idea for the monochromatic card - just please let me know how many I need to make.

Reason: bad typing
Thank you, Rhonda, for posting your questions. I just saw you signature line - and I needed to see it this morning.
Make and post as many as you would like - or as few. So far, I've just done the one. But I like the idea of doing the monochromatic brown card to force myself to stretch a little and try something I wouldn't ordinarily do. And I like the idea of using them business cards. I may have to do that myself. When you say 'rubber stamping' to people who aren't familiar with it, don't have a clue what we're talking about.
I'm in! Just so I know, are we using SU! only products?
Ang, you can use whatever you want!
Actually we all can. I like to use SU! only because I know that I'll do something and then want to repeat it for a workshop or SU! swap. Just makes life easier for me.
But there are also times I'll see something I want to use that's not SU!. Like ribbon. I have a TON of walmart ribbon. I would like to use it, and probably will for something like this.

That's exactly why I love ATCs so much. I feel so free to use anything in anyway. I still have SO much from my pre-demo days that is just sitting around being neglected.
For me, I like to stick to cardfronts for my demo stuff and anything goes for the ATCs. I can understand the desire to use SU! only though, then you have fun and also have more samples to show customers. Either way is great.
Trading cards are my new addiction. I've decided to try to use them as an incentive this year with my middle school special ed students. I already have a trading card page protector for each student that I bought at Wal Mart.
I also thought about doing a trading card make & take instead of or in addition to holiday card make & takes ( Our middle school does a variety of unique intramurals). Maybe this will help my special ed students feel more comfortable about attending intramurals.
I have no idea how this will turn out, but I'm having fun making trading cards. I haven't posted any so far, but I will. I don't think I have made any monochramtic trading cards, yet. I'll have to try it.
This is such an awesome idea! My good friend Jennifer made me a card about the size of a business card and made it so pretty. She wrote on the back of it a little message to me. Little did either of us know that what she did in essence was make an artist trading card.
I think I will explore this a little further and possibly indulge myself in this little challenge.
OK, I'm going to get really serious about making a bunch of ATCs! Tonight I realized the importance! Tonight DH and I went out for dinner. We had a great waitress and something just told me she might be interested in Stampin' Up! The place was busy so there was no time to talk, but I left my business card with the tip.
As I looked at my business card - nice though it is - I realized it didn't really "say" anything about what I do! In this area, no one has ever heard of Stampin' Up! I had to turn the card over and write a small message about creating your own greeting cards, an extra note about viewing my web site to see examples, etc. How LAME!! Oh that I had an ATC with me!! How perfect to SHOW what I do instead of having to write it down!
I will have some of these babies with me ALL the time from now on!
PS - how would you keep these in your pocketbook/handbag/purse, etc. so they don't get ruined?

Reason: add a PS
I haven't tried it, but would they fit in an Altoids tin?
Hmmm haven't thought of that! I have one of those and also have several Celestial Seasonings tins (some kind of promo when you bought a box of bags several years ago) that might work as well.
And....what fun to have a tin to decorate and show as well!

I'm currently keeping mine in an empty SU! stamp set box. Not the tiny one but the small one. I got my 6yo DD and her friend (9yo) from across the street into making them and gave them each a box to use. They treat those boxes like there are diamonds inside! lol (hey, so do I) ;)

RATS! won't fit in either of those tins. Hmmmm....don't little boys get trading cards in tins sometimes? I have a little guy I need to get some stuff for...maybe he'll never realize the cards aren't in a tin ;)

OK, I decided this morning to spend some time cutting up scrap pieces of card stock in a variety of colors so I'd have some ready to work on when I had a few (hahahahahahaha) extra minutes. I measured out 1 on a heavier piece of card stock, re-checked my measurements, cut that piece out, re-checked my measurements again. A-OK so far! Then, I used that as a template and traced around it on my scraps and then VERY carefully began cutting these out on my cutter - making sure every thing was online and that I was actually cutting ON the line. BUT.....when I stack several of these together, they are NOT all exactly the same size. I'm not talking about major differences like 1/4 inch or more, just tiny inequities. This BUGS the anal retentive heck out of me!
So, what does everyone think - how EXACT is "exactly 3.5 X 2.5"???? Should I try to measure each one and retrim and toss back into the scrap pile those that are too small??
HELP!

I DID IT! I decided to take on the challenge of brown - I'm an SU demo - what better color???
Though the scan shows green, my colors were: Kraft (the card), Basic Black, Chocolate Chip, Close to Cocoa and Creamy Caramel. I also used some Silver and Super Bronze Pearl Ex on my Poly Shrink embellishments.
You should be able to click on the link in my signature line to see the card. I might get the chance to work on another monochromatic one between now and Wednesday night.

That is a great idea. Please share the link to other sites that may help those of us who are DHC (Don't Have a Clue) . I want to know more. I really enjoy doing these. The size in itself is both an advantage and a challenge.
I like the idea of trading, too. I have seen swaps posted for ATC's. Most of them are for a specific reason - to illustrate a technique, for a particular season, etc. If you would like to host a swap, let me know. If the theme or topic is anything I can do, I'd love to participate. But I can't do a 50 card swap. Right now 10-20 is my limit. And if you have suggestions for getting trading started amonst us, please let me know.
Thank you so much for your input. I can't wait to see more cards and see what others are doing with these.
Do you suppose we burn a measurable number of calories stretching our brains to do challenges like this? Is there any way I can justify eating the slice of fudge that it took to inspire me as this card developed?? ;)
Was last night the end of the Monochromatic Challenge? I finished one about 10:20 and tried to upload it - finally went to bed at 11 while it was still uploading. It never did go through, so I uploaded it this morning and am just waiting for approval. It is called "Delight in Black and Silver" I decided to do a card that was all in neutrals.
I have one more to upload that I am finishing right now, so I will upload that as well.
What is the new challenge?

Oh my, I can't believe I'm just seeing this. Oh how I wish I had more time to stamp. I just LOVE ATC's and have been wishing they were more popular on SCS! Hi Ang!!! I just might get one done to trade with you. I really need to spend less time of the 'puter!!! And yes, there are tons of links to awesome sites. I'll check out my bookmarks and see what I come up with! Don't know if I can play this week, but this is an awesome new additon to the SCS weekly challenges!!
Wow!!! Can you tell I'm happy!
I have used ATC's to add to a card front. I had a collection growing and was wondering what other things I could do with them besides collecting them. They make a fast, fun card!
