This week's Technique Lovers Challenge is.... Masking. It is a basic stamping technique, but a very good one. Masking is an easy way to add depth to your stamped images by allowing the images to appear to be in front of or behind another image.
See how the cat is behind the pumpkin? She first stamped the pumpkin, then made a 'mask' of the pumpkin, set it directly over the top of the pumpkin, and then stamped the cat. To make the mask for pumpkin, simply stamp the pumpkin on a post-it note (be sure to stamp on the part of the post it note that has the sticky stuff on the back) and cut out the image. Cut just a hair INSIDE the image. Then set the mask (the cut-out pumpkin) directly on top of the pumpkin already stamped on the card. Now you are ready to stamp the cat. Ink it up, and stamp it so that it overlaps the pumpkin. The post it note 'mask' will protect the orange pumpkin from getting the black ink from the cat. Peel off the mask, and voila! A terrific scene with the cat behind the pumpkin.
If you don't have post-its, just use regular copy/computer paper. Hold it in place with your fingers. Don't use cardstock for your mask...it is too thick and will leave a gap between the images.
If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us STAMPIN' !!
I hope you have been enjoying this long weekend! I have family in from Ohio and I'm off to visit with them. As we take a break from our labors on this Labor Day, let's also take some time to love our families and our friends. Katrina has reminded us that there is nothing more precious than our families and friends, and we never know what tomorrow will bring. I would like to give ALL of you who play along with the TLCs, be it all the time or occasionally, a really big HUG and a THANK YOU. I have made so many friends through this TLC thing, and I am soo lucky. {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}

OMG! I can't believe I just found my card as an example! Thanks for the compliment! I'll see what else I can come up with for the masking technique, tonight.
I know you guys probably think I only have one set of stamps since I use Loads of Love so much but I just love it. Here is my challenge for masking with pumpkins from Window on the World. I liked this challenge.
I haven't done this technique on anything yet. What's wrong with me??? LOL! I guess I always thought it would be harder than it is. I'll work on it as soon as I can. Thanks for this challenge! Makes me try new things and I love learning new ways to make cards. Thanks Beth!
I love masking! It is such a simple technique that produces awesome cards.
Here's one I made today. I went to my demo's house, and got to use all her fun stuff.

Well I finished it. Who knows if it will be in the category I selected when I uploaded because I used 4 different sets for this card! :o I can't wait to check out every ones card in the morning. It's 1:00 am now and I'm going to bed.
Oooo I love masking! I will have to see if I can do some cards in the next few days. For now, here is one from my gallery. I put the presents under the tree using the masking tech. Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Have been too busy to stamp much lately, but I love MASKING and use the technique often. I just chose two cards already in my gallery that I thought were good use of it.

I'd never tried this technique before (gasp...I've been stamping for almost a year) so I went a little crazy and did three cards. Here they are. Thanks so much for posting this challenge, Beth. And, thanks in advance to any of you who are kind enough to review my cards!

I actually posted this one yesterday not knowing about this tlc.
I have the farmer on the feed and the feed bags layered.
I used a cardstock mask but it was from very vanilla which is a lighter cs.
What a fun challenge this is, thank you Beth!
This card took a little time to do so I won't be doing a lot of them with the border.
The swirls just add so much to the card - I'm such a fibber, they're hiding a mistake!!! The Happy Halloween was an after thought too, for the same reason and it wasn't even a masking mistake. My Halloween Bear
