So stumped...sealing glossy tiles for making message/memo boards??
Please help! I have searched this site for hours trying to find an answer, and have found TONS of info on the coaster tiles, but none for kitchen type 6x6 glossy tile message boards. My girlfriends and I think they're the best thing since sliced bread as we use them for our daily "to do" lists instead of having 14 post it notes floating all over our counters everyday! ;)
So here's the thing, I have been stamping these 6x6 glossy/glazed tiles with Staz on, but I can't figure out how to permanantly make the Staz On stay on! Heat embossing doesn't work. Spray on sealer is a disaster as when the dry erase marker is wiped off, it gets into the finite little bumps/cracks the sealer leaves. Recently we've been baking them for 20-30 min at 400 degrees, and that's our best option up to this point, but still, if you accidently use a damp paper towel on it, the Staz On rubs off. There's got to be a way to make the Staz On stay on permanantly.
I'll try to attach a photo so you can see what I'm talking about. (I've never done that before so if it doesn't work, the pic is in my gallery.)
Any glossy tile experts out there with any insight?? Please help!!
The only tile message board I've seen so far is in iwasborntostamp's gallery. My suggestion would be to PM her and ask what she did to make it work. Glossy tiles are very tricky to stamp on because they are completely nonabsorbent (unlike the tumbled marble ones used for coasters) and the glaze is too smooth for the ink to grab onto. This isn't usually a problem with other nonporous surfaces like glass because you aren't normally trying to wash or wipe the things you make.

would crystal Effects work on these? I've never used it, so I have absolutely no experience with it. But it seems it can be used for just about anything else you can dream of.
There was an extensive thread on this topic just before Christmas. An SCS'r had listed all the do's and don'ts with different kind of tiles. If I remember correctly, for the 2"x2" glossy tiles, she used stazon and then microwaved briefly so that she could color in with sharpies. She said that they couldn't be washed with soap and water or both inks would come off due to "no tooth" on the tile. But don't you all just use water and a soft cloth to remove the the dry erase marker from the tile? If so, perhaps the microwave is all that is needed.
If I can find find that thread, I will post it. Just no luck as of yet.
I found that I could stamp my image with StazOn, add embossing powder and then heat set == the image stayed. not sure about what to do if the image needs coloring...
Crystal Effects is MAGIC! It looks awsome on the tiles and before I put it on the flower one, I colored it in. I think I'm even going to sell them at our local craft fair this fall. What do you think...$10? $12? $15? It costs me less than $3 to make them.
I've tried stamping on glossy tiles before. The only solution I could find was to lightly sand the surface of each tile before stamping. That seemed to solve my problem...I still baked them in the oven for 12 minutes at 400 degrees just to be sure. I haven't had any problems with the image coming off after that...
When I made these for teacher gifts a few years ago, I put CE on the stamped image. I had a very simple image (Crayon Kids?), so I just put CE directly on the image - no where else. Seemed to work great.
Is Crystal Effects the samething as dazzeling diamonds? A clear goopy liquid you squeeze out of a bottle and it dries raised (dimensional) clear and shiny?

Crystal effects is a product from SU that is as you described (goopy liquid...). Dazzling Diamonds is also from SU and is their clear glitter. Having said all that, there could be a product out there like Crystal Effects by another company that calls theirs Dazzling Diamonds!

I've been stamping dominoes left and right this month, quick easy gift for those you need to give a little something to. I stamp with stazon - let dry - sometimes it's the last thing I do at night - let dry. In the AM I coat with Mod Podge with a foam brush, less streaking, let dry. Let the stazon dry so that when you go to color with other stazon it won't run. Put pins on and your good to go. I'm going to try CE as I have some but reall like the gloss lustre of Mod Podge.
I could take a pic but not sure about posting. I put these in my cards and cut a hole in the front so the pin shows thru. Hard to decide whether you want the pin or it in the card.
One more thing - if you don't like the stamped image on the tile or domino (as long as you haven't sealed it). You can use stazon cleaner, just dab directly on and let sit for a few mins and wipe off with paper towel or tissue. Let dry and restamp. I have found stamping with the image up and the tile down - better imprint and less likely to slide around. I had a poorly stamped image on their for about 6 years - something you didn't want to throw out but now what - it worked.

thats a good idea. you can use rubbing alcohol too it wipes it off right away(plus its cheap)!!!

Wow!!! Old thread, just found...I was having trouble with my Sharpie markers "scratching off" my Staz on...NOW I know why, SEAL it first then color it, then seal it AGAIN!!!! Cool!! TY SO much and I'm loving the 6x6 message board idea!!! Man I LOVE SCS!!!!:mrgreen:
